History is already in the making for Gospel High School as its under-15 rugby league side prepares for the first national semi-final appearance in the school’s history this weekend. The Gospel Saints will meet Lautoka Central College at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Saturday in what team manager Agnes Wye described as the club’s “biggest test”.
Wye said the run to the last four has been built on unity, discipline and strong community backing. “This is the first time for our school to reach this level — from the zone competition to the national quarterfinals and now the semi-finals. It’s a big achievement for us,” she said, reflecting on a breakthrough season for the Saints. The progression from local zone matches through to the national quarterfinals marks a milestone for Gospel High, which has not previously advanced this far in the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition.
Acknowledging the grassroots effort behind the team’s success, Wye singled out parents, the school administration and fellow students for their sustained support. “We thank our parents, our principal and the students who have come out every weekend to support the boys. Their encouragement has been very important,” she said, noting that the backing has been a crucial factor in the players’ confidence and preparation.
On the field, Wye urged her players to stick to simple principles ahead of Saturday’s encounter. “Team unity is very important. No one player can win a game alone. If they work together, they can achieve something special,” she said, emphasizing trust and collective effort as the game plan for the Saints as they face a traditionally strong Lautoka Central side.
Wye also issued a rallying cry to supporters across the Western Division, asking fans to turn out at Churchill Park to bolster the team. “We ask our supporters to come out and cheer for the boys. This is a special moment for our school, and their support will mean a lot,” she said. The Saints hope the home‑town atmosphere and vocal backing will help carry them into the decider.
As Gospel High prepares for what could be the defining fixture of its season, the focus remains on maintaining discipline and unity built throughout the campaign. With a place in the final at stake, the Saints face a stern test against Lautoka Central College, and the result will determine whether Gospel’s historic run continues into the championship match.
