The Global Development Conference (GDC) 2024 took place recently at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji, organized by the Global Development Network (GDN) in partnership with the Fijian government. This year’s event successfully gathered over 700 individuals from nearly 100 countries, with a mix of over 200 attendees participating in person and around 500 joining virtually.
The conference served as a vital platform for climate experts, policymakers, researchers, civil society representatives, and students to engage in significant discussions regarding climate resilience tailored to local contexts. The assembly underlined the urgent need for collaborative approaches to overcoming the escalating challenges posed by climate change.
A recurring theme throughout the conference was the critical role that evidence-based research plays in shaping effective policies. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Prof. Biman Prasad, emphasized the importance of integrating research with strategy, particularly in response to the growing uncertainties exacerbated by climate change. He stressed the necessity for Pacific nations to enhance their research capabilities to better support climate finance and adaptation strategies, thereby reinforcing the region’s resilience.
Prof. Prasad’s remarks included a call to action for the GDN community to communicate research findings effectively, countering rising skepticism towards science. This emphasis on research aligns with previous workshops held in Fiji, which aimed to strengthen local capacities for climate adaptation through practical tools and methodologies.
Additionally, discussions highlighted the dire consequences of climate change faced by the Pacific Islands, with a unified commitment to pursue solutions rooted in scientific understanding.
