A German Shepherd that wandered nearly four kilometres from home has been reunited with its owner after being found alone on a Navua beach by the sons of lawyer Aca Rayawa.

Rayawa said his sons had gone to collect coconuts when they came across the dog, later identified as Ranger, playing at the water's edge. “At the beach they saw this German Shepherd jumping into the sea and enjoying the beach by himself,” he told local social media followers. The dog then followed the boys back to their base camp, where Rayawa realised Ranger appeared to be lost.

“He looked like he was asking for help,” Rayawa said. He added that he spoke to the animal in Fijian to calm him and promised he would find Ranger’s family. The German Shepherd, trusting the family, jumped willingly into Rayawa’s car for the journey to Nausori, where Rayawa posted notices online in an effort to locate the owner.

Owner Nikhish Nilesh soon responded to Rayawa’s online posts and identified the dog as Ranger. Rayawa described the moment of recognition: “I called his name and his eyes lit up.” Ranger was then returned to his home in Navua, completing the search that had begun when he was found alone on the shore.

The reunion brought clear relief to Ranger’s owner and a quieter, bittersweet feeling for Rayawa’s family, who had cared for the dog while the search unfolded. Rayawa said his sons were sad to say goodbye after spending time looking after the animal and watching him enjoy the beach.

The case underlines how quickly pets can become separated from their owners and the role of immediate community action and social media in reuniting them. It also comes amid heightened awareness in Navua about pet security following recent incidents of dog theft in the area, which have prompted owners to be more vigilant about collars, identification and reporting missing animals.

Ranger is now back with Nilesh in Navua. Rayawa’s swift intervention — from calming the animal in Fijian to driving him to a place where his owner could be reached — ensured a happy ending for the dog and a poignant reminder of neighbours helping neighbours in moments of need.
