The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has allocated over $10.5 million for rebuilding and operational expenditures since the start of 2023, aiming to ensure its financial independence and enhance administrative efficiencies. iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu outlined these financial commitments in a recent statement.
A significant portion of the budget, approximately $7.58 million, has been dedicated to the reconstruction of Vale Ni Bose, the Council’s primary meeting venue. Additionally, $1.74 million has been earmarked for the refurbishment of the GCC Talanoa Lounge, while another $130,000 was invested in acquiring an official vehicle for the GCC chairman. Operational costs, which encompass expenses for meetings and salaries for secretariat staff, have exceeded $1.1 million.
Furthermore, Vasu noted that the GCC Implementation Team has utilized $253,810 from a budget of $390,000, which covers staff salaries, research, and equipment, leaving $136,190 still available for future use.
These expenditures reflect the GCC’s ongoing commitment to improving its facilities and operational capabilities, which is crucial for addressing the needs of the i-Taukei communities it represents.
