The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has reported spending over $10.5 million on administration and operations from 2023 until July 30, 2025. This was detailed by the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifireimi Vasu, during a recent parliamentary session.
A significant portion of this expenditure, approximately $9.45 million, has been directed toward capital projects. Notable investments include the reconstruction of Vale ni Bose for $7.5 million and the refurbishment of the GCC Talanoa Lounge at a cost of $1.7 million. Additionally, an official vehicle for the GCC Chairman was purchased for $130,000.
Operational expenses, which amounted to $1.11 million, cover costs related to meetings and the maintenance of the secretariat. Breakdown of the meeting expenses illustrated varying costs over the years: in 2023, $134,736 was spent; in 2024, this rose to $340,158, and in 2025, $144,997 is budgeted. Meanwhile, the GCC Secretariat’s expenses were reported to be $492,120.
This pattern of spending aligns with previous reports regarding the GCC’s meetings. For instance, a two-day meeting held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva also incurred costs of around $200,000, funded by the iTaukei Trust Fund. The Chairperson, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, highlighted the importance of such gatherings, despite their costs, indicating that these investments are vital for the betterment of i-Taukei communities.
Looking forward, the next GCC meeting is slated for May 2025, with expectations that it will take place at a newly constructed complex. This new venue is anticipated to improve logistical efficiencies, supporting the Council’s efforts to address key issues impacting the communities they represent.
These financial commitments reflect a dedication to enhancing community engagement and improving the infrastructure necessary for cultural governance.
