At least 40 Palestinians have reportedly been killed as a result of Israeli gunfire and airstrikes in Gaza, with health authorities indicating that the death toll includes 10 individuals who were seeking aid. Additionally, five people have died from starvation amidst dire warnings from humanitarian agencies suggesting the onset of famine in the region.

The fatalities occurred in two separate incidents near aid distribution sites operated by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in central and southern Gaza. Local medics have reported that these areas have become increasingly perilous, with the United Nations documenting over 1,000 deaths of individuals attempting to access aid since the GHF began its operations in May 2025. Most of these individuals reportedly lost their lives due to gunfire from Israeli forces in the vicinity of the aid sites.

This latest incident reflects a troubling trend noted previously, where violence has erupted around food distribution points, resulting in significant casualties. Just last week, a similar scenario prompted widespread condemnation from various humanitarian organizations, who have pointed to the urgent need for more effective measures to ensure the safety of civilians attempting to secure essential resources.

The GHF and other aid organizations have faced criticism regarding their distribution methods, which some argue fail to meet established humanitarian standards. Despite this criticism, the GHF continues to strive to provide essential meals and support to the beleaguered population in Gaza.

As the humanitarian situation deteriorates, the resilience of the Gazan people remains evident as they persist in their search for help. International advocacy and urgent diplomatic efforts are crucial to facilitate safer aid access during these tumultuous times. Advocates hope that through persistent engagement, conditions could improve for those impacted by the ongoing conflict.
