Sports administrators have convened for the National Sporting Organisations Conference at the Harbour Point Convention Centre in Lami, which began yesterday. This significant event unites officials from various sports disciplines to engage in discussions about pressing issues affecting the sporting landscape in Fiji.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, officially opened the conference, which features an array of sessions led by prominent speakers, including Mark Evans, CEO of Fijian Drua, Peter Mazey, CEO of the Fiji National Sports Commission, Vanessa Kilner, CEO of FASANOC, and Atma Maharaj from the Brisbane 2032 Olympics Committee. They are set to cover crucial topics such as governance, youth development, sports tourism, and the mental health of athletes.
A key moment in the conference was the unveiling of the nominees for the 2024 Fiji Sports Awards, announced last night. This year, the awards highlight a remarkable roster of 112 nominees across 22 national sporting organizations, demonstrating a robust commitment to sporting excellence in Fiji—reflecting a notable increase from the previous year’s nominations.
Today’s sessions are expected to bring together voices from a wide range of sports, including weightlifting, touch rugby, amateur boxing, athletics, rugby, netball, outrigger canoeing, cricket, swimming, and football. The discussions aim to spark innovative ideas that could enhance the structure and future of sports in Fiji, fostering empowerment through collaboration and community involvement.
This conference acts as a crucial platform for dialogue and is a testament to the spirit of unity among sports enthusiasts in Fiji. The concerted efforts towards improving sports governance and development may have a transformative impact on the country’s sporting community, paving the way for a brighter future for athletes and making sports more accessible for everyone.
