The battle against drug-related crime in Fiji faces significant challenges due to a lack of adequate funding, prompting urgent calls for stronger political commitment. Acting Director of Public Prosecutions John Rabuku has characterized the situation as an escalating national crisis that necessitates immediate attention and resources.

Rabuku highlighted the crucial role that financial support plays in the fight against illicit drugs, asserting that while expertise and international assistance are valuable, the key to effective action lies in securing sustainable funding. He noted that previous consultations with the government aimed at establishing a dedicated narcotics prosecution unit yielded some assistance, but emphasized that much more is needed to combat organized drug crime effectively.

He stressed the importance of political will being translated into concrete financial investments, stating, “So it really goes back to political will, but this is how we make political will. As far as I’m concerned, political will means money. Give us the money.” Rabuku underscored that without sustained funding for law enforcement, prosecution, and recovery efforts, Fiji cannot make significant strides against drug trafficking and related criminal activities.

Moreover, he proposed that enhancing asset recovery systems could help dismantle criminal networks by redirecting their funds, suggesting that while resources are currently available, further investment is essential to maximize their effectiveness.

Rabuku’s comments reflect a broader need for prioritization of resources to address the rising drug crisis in Fiji, indicating that a strategic focus on financial support could pave the way for a more robust response to this pressing public safety issue. The commitment of the government to bolster funding for these initiatives could significantly impact the country’s ability to confront the challenges posed by organized drug crime head-on.
