The Vanua o Nadonumai has expressed deep gratitude for recent collaborative efforts aimed at addressing the longstanding issue of derelict vessels in Suva Harbour. The initiative gained considerable momentum thanks to the announcement from the Waitt Foundation, which has committed a substantial $2.26 million to fund the removal of these vessels. This donation serves as a tribute to conservationist Captain Jonathan Smith, acknowledging his contribution to marine protection.
Tui Suva, Ratu Sanaila Madanavosa, emphasized the significance of this development, noting that the traditional custodians of Suva Harbour have voiced their concerns for many years about the environmental degradation caused by these abandoned ships. Ratu Sanaila remarked on the dramatic changes in the waters over the years, stating, “We used to fish near the village, but now we have to go all the way offshore.” This shift adds strain to the local fishing community and highlights the urgent need for environmental restoration.
The removal of 17 high-risk vessels is the primary objective under this initiative, although Ratu Sanaila hopes that it will pave the way for broader efforts to clear Suva Harbour of additional debris and improve the overall health of the marine ecosystem. The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, with villagers expressing excitement and happiness upon learning of the funding and planned actions.
This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance ocean governance, as previously highlighted by various government officials and organizations. Such collaborations reflect a growing commitment to environmental health, with previous reports noting a decrease in the number of derelict vessels in the harbour due to sustained removal efforts.
Overall, this endeavor not only targets immediate environmental concerns regarding the derelict vessels but also fosters a hopeful trajectory toward restoring the beauty and integrity of Suva’s marine environment. By investing in the ecological preservation of this vital area, the project not only supports local livelihoods but also aims to create a cleaner and more navigable harbour for future generations.
