Consumers in Fiji should brace themselves for an increase in gas and diesel prices starting today. The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) made the announcement yesterday, attributing the rise in fuel prices to fluctuations in the Means of Platts Singapore (MOPS), international freight rates, and foreign exchange rates.

According to FCCC, this adjustment in fuel and LPG prices follows a one-month lag period, meaning that the prices set for December 2024 reflect the costs incurred by fuel companies for refined fuel and butane imports made in October 2024. Their analysis indicates that prices for motor spirit, premix, and kerosene will spike due to unfavorable changes in international refined fuel prices.

The situation is compounded by a stronger US dollar against the Fijian dollar for these commodities. Additionally, crude oil prices experienced a rebound in October 2024 as concerns regarding demand softened amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

To ensure compliance with the new pricing structures, FCCC’s enforcement team will conduct inspections at various retail outlets and service stations. They have urged consumers to report any unfair trading practices, including hoarding and overcharging, to their enforcement teams via phone or email.

While these price increases can be challenging for consumers, they do highlight the importance of vigilance in market practices. The FCCC’s approach to monitoring compliance may provide some reassurance that measures are in place to protect consumers from potential exploitation.

In summary, although fuel prices in Fiji are set to rise due to external market pressures, the enforcement of price regulations aims to uphold fair trading practices, presenting a hopeful outlook for consumer protection in the marketplace.
