The prices for kerosene, diesel, and gas in Fiji are set to increase starting January 13, as announced by the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC). The latest price adjustments come in response to changes in international fuel markets and local economic conditions.
Effective tomorrow, kerosene will see an increase of four cents per liter, bringing its price to $1.78. Diesel will also increase by four cents, now costing $2.31 per liter. Thankfully, prices for motor spirit and premix fuel will remain unchanged at $2.67 and $2.51 per liter, respectively.
The new pricing structure for gas will be as follows:
– 4.5kg gas cylinder: $15.53 (up 18 cents)
– 12kg gas cylinder: $41.42 (up 50 cents)
– Bulk gas: $3.20/kg (up four cents)
– Autogas: $2.25/litre (up three cents)
These changes in kerosene and diesel pricing are largely attributed to unfavorable fluctuations in international refined fuel prices and a strong US dollar against the Fijian dollar. However, the impact on gas prices has been somewhat moderated by a decrease in international freight rates and changes in butane contract prices.
While these price increases can understandably put financial pressure on households, they also present an opportunity for consumers to rethink energy usage. This situation encourages exploring renewable energy sources and becoming more energy-efficient, ultimately benefiting both individual households and the environment.
In summary, the adjustment in fuel prices reflects ongoing economic conditions that may challenge families but can also inspire greater awareness and innovation in energy practices, fostering a sustainable approach to energy consumption in Fiji.
