Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde has publicly addressed his delayed return to office, stressing that the lack of response from the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) regarding new complaints against him is a key factor. He noted that on February 14, 2025, he submitted a comprehensive letter responding to the allegations made by Acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva, but has received no acknowledgment or communication from the JSC or its Chief Registrar, Tomasi Bainivalu.

In his statements, Pryde expressed frustration over the situation, indicating he has made efforts to keep government officials informed, including Attorney-General Graham Leung and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, yet has not received any feedback. He emphasized his readiness to return to work, provided he receives assurance that he will not face immediate suspension or salary cuts again, having already endured nearly two years under suspension and seven months without pay.

Pryde also voiced concerns about the recent reinstatement of Assistant DPP Lasani Tabuakuro, whom he had suspended due to a past email that he deemed inappropriate and damaging to the Office of the DPP (ODPP). He criticized the decision to reinstate her as a poor reflection of the current management.

This ongoing impasse underscores the complexities and challenges in the governance of Fiji’s legal system. The situation has sparked discussions about the need for greater accountability and improved communication within public institutions, with stakeholders hoping that resolving these issues could ultimately lead to meaningful reform.

The continued efforts by Pryde to engage with the JSC and his willingness to face challenges head-on reflect a commitment to restore integrity and trust within the public prosecution office. There remains optimism within the legal community that a resolution may pave the way for strengthened processes and practices in Fiji’s justice system.
