A group of cousins recently turned a casual yaqona session into a musical journey by forming their own band, Chapter 5 (C5). This creative gathering, facilitated by their uncle Oliver McCaig, saw the cousins showcasing their talent to Sweet Sensations frontman Olsen J Sefo, who was impressed with their performance.

Chapter 5, aptly named for being fifth-generation musicians of Wallis and Futuna descent, has quickly become a notable presence in Fiji’s music scene. Drummer and co-manager Nicholas Smith shared that the band was formed just a year ago, starting with three members: himself, lead guitarist Michael Yalani, and rhythm guitarist Niko Yalani. As the group expanded to include bassist Filipe Yalani and cousins Maya and Niu Smith, the girls introduced a fresh dynamic that enriched their sound.

The band jams weekly at Mana Coffee in Suva, expressing gratitude for the venue’s support. Their musical style predominantly features reggae, but they adapt their performances depending on the audience. They are set to showcase their talents at the upcoming 2024 Bounty Reggae Christmas Festival on December 21, where they promise an engaging and vibrant experience with a selection of popular reggae covers.

Chapter 5 draws inspiration from well-known artists like Olsen J Sefo and Miles Manulevu, as well as personal influences from family members such as Sanfred Smith and Sebastian Yalani. Although they acknowledge the pressures of performing, they see it as an opportunity for growth. The band invites everyone to attend their festival performance, looking to build a deeper connection with their audience through music.

This story serves as a reminder of the power of family, tradition, and music in bringing people together. As Chapter 5 continues to develop and perform, they not only honor their heritage but also contribute to the vibrant cultural tapestry of Fiji’s music scene.

In summary, this article highlights the journey of Chapter 5 from a simple gathering to a growing musical endeavor, emphasizing the importance of community and inspiration in fostering creativity and talent.
