Naeca Vatanitawake, an athlete from Yasawa, is reveling in the opportunity to participate in the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games held at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. Reflecting on the journey from his village, Yasawa-i-Rara, he expressed the challenges of accessing resources and opportunities in comparison to urban life in Suva.

“It’s quite a struggle to come all the way from the village,” Vatanitawake shared. “We have worked diligently to earn medals in this competition.” He emphasized the joy he finds in sprinting, attributing his strength and abilities to his faith in God.

Vatanitawake highlighted several obstacles his athletics team encountered during their training, particularly in terms of financial support and the arduous nature of their preparations. Nevertheless, the team remained optimistic, trusting the process and their collective effort to succeed.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Vatanitawake has excelled academically, proud to have been named dux at Bukama Village School—a milestone deeply celebrated by his family, who are planning a feast in his honor. He also completed the Fiji Year Eight examination successfully.

“I encourage my peers to strive for excellence in both academics and sports. If you’re struggling in academics, try to channel that energy into sports,” he advised. Vatanitawake also aspires to become a rugby player, dreaming of one day competing as a Flying Fijian, inspired by his favorite player Caleb Muntz.

This uplifting account of Naeca Vatanitawake not only illustrates his personal victories but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes and students in similar rural communities. It reflects the resilience and determination needed to overcome the challenges posed by limited resources, while also advocating the importance of balancing sports and academics.

The story encapsulates the spirit of perseverance, encouraging young people to pursue their passions and reminding them that with hard work and dedication, success is within reach.
