Rusila Camaibure expresses deep gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices, which have enabled her to pursue her academic and sports aspirations. The 20-year-old player shared her journey with SUNsports during an interview, discussing her involvement with the Kulawai rugby league team in Melbourne, comprising many players of iTaukei descent participating in the Bula Cup competition.

Camaibure was chosen for the Victorian state team, though her primary background is in rugby union, a sport she has grown to appreciate through playing rugby league. Originating from Delaidamanu Village in Naitasiri and having maternal ties to Visoqo, Macuata, she describes herself as a utility player capable of filling positions on both the wing and the second row.

Her educational journey began at Natoaika District School, where she studied from Year One to Eight, followed by Years Nine to 13 at Muaniweni College. Presently, she is pursuing her studies at Yorke Institute in Melbourne.

Initially, Camaibure was skeptical about an email from the Bulikula team, suspecting it might be a scam. However, upon responding, she received a call from coach Joe Rabele, confirming her selection for the team. Her primary aim is now to help the team qualify for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup.

Feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness about representing her national team, family, and province for the first time, she acknowledges the significant differences between rugby union and rugby league in terms of structure and rules, which she is still learning.

Camaibure also shared that being away from her parents has been a challenge. She has made sacrifices to participate in rugby while managing her education in Melbourne. Her parents continuously remind her to emphasize her Christian faith during her time in Australia.

Despite the difficulties of evolving as a rugby league player, Camaibure remains thankful for her parents’ influence and guidance, encouraging young people to recognize that their sacrifices will ultimately lead to rewards.
