Private Mereani Wakolo has experienced profound personal growth and transformation through her service in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). Returning home after a challenging 12-month Tour of Duty (TOD) in Iraq, which involved 82 soldiers, Wakolo reflected on how the discipline she learned during her basic training fundamentally changed her outlook on life.
At 26 years old and the youngest member of her team during her first deployment, Wakolo faced significant hurdles but credits her older peers for their support and guidance. “The experience was tough, but it taught me a lot about what it means to be on a battlefield,” she noted. This journey was not only about overcoming physical challenges; it also fostered her belief in self-control and the ability to believe in her own potential.
Wakolo, who previously struggled with anger management as a young student, shared a pivotal incident from her time at Suva Sangam College that highlighted her difficulties with discipline. However, she expressed gratitude for the tough training in the military that helped reshape her behavior and attitude.
Moreover, her journey extends beyond her military service. Last year, she also played for the RFMF women’s rugby team during a tour in New Zealand, showcasing her versatility and commitment to both sports and service.
Wakolo’s story is a powerful reminder of how dedication and support can lead to significant personal development. Her experience illustrates the potential for transformation that can emerge from life’s challenges. As she reunites with her family, her journey serves as an inspiration for others who may be seeking to overcome personal obstacles and find a fulfilling path in life.
