Emotions ran high yesterday at the Vodafone Arena as the Sagar family celebrated a significant milestone in their lives following the recognition of their daughter, Priyashna Shivangi Sagar, as the Best Student in her Bachelor of Commerce program. At just 21 years old, Priyashna, a dedicated student from the Fiji National University, has demonstrated immense discipline and perseverance throughout her academic journey.
Traveling from Nasau, Nadi, her parents, Sunita Devi and Ram Sagar, were overwhelmed with pride and tears of joy as they witnessed their daughter accept the award. Priyashna attributes her success to the hard work and sacrifices made by her family, particularly highlighting the financial struggles they faced while ensuring she and her siblings received an education.
Reflecting on her upbringing, she shared, “I grew up in a family where financial bearings were a major challenge.” The support of her elder siblings and the determination to prioritize her studies fueled her commitment, allowing her to excel in school. She noted that her brother’s encouragement to focus on her education, rather than seeking work to assist the family, played a crucial role in her success.
With prior accolades including the Dux award in Year 10 and second place in her final year of secondary school, Priyashna’s achievements have been remarkable. Thanks to the National Toppers Scholarship, she has successfully completed her studies and is now employed at Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPGM) International Limited.
Her mother, Sunita Devi, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the assistance and support they received, underscoring that all their struggles have culminated in this rewarding day. “I am so proud of her. The struggles we encountered over the years have paid off and I can’t express how grateful I am for this day,” she said.
The Sagar family’s journey is an inspiring testament to the power of resilience, support, and the importance of education. Priyashna’s story serves as a beacon of hope to many, illustrating that with hard work and perseverance, dreams can indeed become reality.
