Kelepi Salakawa, a determined 67-year-old dairy farmer from Tonia Village in Tailevu, has achieved remarkable success on his 104-acre farm in Naiyala, Wainibuka, despite facing numerous adversities. His agricultural journey began in 1972 at Navuso Agriculture School, where hands-on experiences equipped him with essential skills for farming.
Initially, Kelepi utilized savings from his education to purchase cattle and establish a small farm on mataqali Navinaka land, complete with a simple lean-to house. In 2000, he shifted towards dairy farming after receiving guidance from livestock officials at the Ministry of Agriculture, which marked a significant turning point in his career. He sold his initial cattle stock and acquired dairy breeds from the Koronivia Livestock Research, seamlessly committing himself to this new endeavor.
Over the years, Kelepi has developed his techniques in milking while adapting to fluctuating market prices and variable weather conditions. His hand milking approach not only ensures high-quality milk production but also allows him to form a deep bond with his cows, enabling him to observe their health and behavior closely. Presently, he manages a herd of 105 cattle, yielding 80 liters of milk each day for the Waidewara chilling center.
Kelepi’s aspirations for the future include the introduction of milking machines and enhanced pasture cultivation for his cows. He expresses gratitude towards the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for their ongoing support, which includes introducing Brown Swiss breeds and assistance with fencing and Tuberculosis (TB) testing to maintain a TB-free herd.
Through unwavering perseverance, Kelepi has not only provided for his family and funded his children’s education but has also made significant investments in his farming operations. His encouraging message to others facing challenges is simple but powerful: “Do not give up. Rest, but keep going. Focus on what supports your family, and remain content.”
With the help of the 2023/2024 Dairy Extension Program, Kelepi’s journey exemplifies the positive impact of dedication and community assistance in achieving success in agriculture.
This inspiring story highlights the tenacity of individuals like Kelepi who, through hard work and resilience, contribute to their communities and family well-being, proving that adversity can lead to flourishing opportunities.
