Inia Tabuavou’s inspiring journey from the streets of Lautoka to the professional rugby scene, including his current role with the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, encapsulates resilience, commitment, and the spirit of giving back.
Facing significant hardships after the death of his father when he was just a child in Class three, Tabuavou took on the responsibility of supporting his family when no one was employed at home. He vividly recalls, “My dad was the sole breadwinner, so when he died, I had to work hard to provide for my family.” This daunting reality forced him into entrepreneurship at a young age, selling cakes and roti on the streets and outside Lautoka Hospital to support his mother. “My mum would prepare the food, and I would go out and sell it. It wasn’t easy, but I knew I had to help her,” he mentioned. Such experiences fostered his determination and shaped his outlook on life.
His fortunes changed with a rugby scholarship to Rotorua Boys’ High School in New Zealand, leading him to join Racing 92 in France’s Top 14 competition at the age of 17. By 19, he made his professional debut. Despite gaining invaluable experience over five years in Europe, Tabuavou felt the pull of home, expressing sorrow at missing Christmas with his family for four consecutive years. He stated, “It was a hard decision to come back, but I’m excited to be home and join the Drua.”
Tabuavou’s return signifies a new chapter, as he aims to contribute significantly to the Drua, particularly in securing away game victories and representing the Flying Fijians. He remains deeply connected to his roots, often supporting local street vendors, recalling his own struggles. “When I see small kids selling on the street, I buy everything they have. Even if it’s just one roti, I’ll give them $100 because I know what it feels like. I’ve been in their shoes before,” he said.
Now, not only does Tabuavou ensure his mother lives comfortably, but he also serves as a beacon of inspiration for many. “Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I always dreamed of giving back to my mum because we had nothing and struggled so much. Now, I have what I need and can support her,” he reflected.
As he launches into his first season with the Drua, Tabuavou’s life story stands as a powerful reminder of the values of perseverance, sacrifice, and the importance of remembering one’s origins. His experiences can motivate others facing adversity, showing them that with determination, a brighter future is attainable.
