Answin Lata Goundar’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination, demonstrating that the market is more than just a place to earn a living; it has become a gateway to a fulfilling life. Originally from Qalewaqa Labasa, Ms. Goundar’s transformation began in 2012 when she moved to Suva in search of better employment opportunities.
Starting her career working for a local Chinese vendor at the Suva Municipal Market, Ms. Goundar initially faced challenges due to her shyness and lack of experience in customer service. Over the years, she has gained invaluable experience and skills, appreciating the guidance of her former employer. “I learned how to talk and serve customers even if they had less money to shop; I know how to deal with them,” she shared.
Fueled by her ambition and newfound confidence, Ms. Goundar envisioned establishing her own stall. This dream materialized in 2020 when she successfully applied for a space at the newly opened Laqere market in Nasinu. Today, she manages four stalls and sources her fresh vegetables from Sigatoka and Baulevu, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit.
Ms. Goundar’s hard work and determination not only support her family but also allow her to fulfill her personal desires. “I do this so I can buy the things I want,” she said with a smile, highlighting the satisfaction that comes from financial independence. She enjoys a supportive family life with her husband, Kelvin Raj, who is involved in carpentry, and their six-year-old son attending Rishikul Primary School.
Her story resonates deeply with many women vendors in Fiji, exemplifying the ideals of independence and perseverance. In the vibrant atmosphere of the Laqere market, filled with lively interactions and the delightful scent of fresh produce, Ms. Goundar stands as a symbol of resilience. She is not just navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship; she is redefining her path while strengthening her family’s financial stability. Through her journey, she inspires others to carve out opportunities and embrace their own potential.
