In recent times, the youth of Nakorosule village have recognized the significant role of agriculture in enhancing their livelihood. Many young individuals are opting for farming as a means to support their families, especially amidst the development projects happening in their communities.

One particularly inspiring story is that of Malakai Colabenu, a dedicated 23-year-old farmer. He developed a deep passion for agriculture at a young age, eventually deciding to pursue this area more seriously after finishing school. Colabenu expressed that he returned to his hometown with aspirations of utilizing his land for farming, focusing specifically on growing taro.

“I started in Grade 7 in my local school, and it was my aim to support my family through farming before I took on jobs elsewhere,” Colabenu shared. He highlighted the challenges faced by farmers but also expressed gratitude for the community’s support, especially in selling taro locally.

Colabenu has demonstrated remarkable success in his farming endeavors; just last year, he harvested five tons of taro, and this year, he is on track to exceed that amount. He currently sells his produce for $3 per kilogram and has set a goal of building a home to create a stable future for himself.

Despite being only 23, Colabenu is setting a powerful example for his peers, showing how commitment to agriculture can lead to financial independence and community support. He encourages young individuals in and around his village to appreciate and utilize their land efficiently, highlighting that it can provide the necessary resources for their daily lives.

This story of resilience and ambition is a reminder of the potential that lies in pursuing agriculture, especially for the youth in rural areas. With determination, they can work towards building a sustainable and fulfilling future for themselves and their families.

The hopeful takeaway from Colabenu’s journey is that through hard work and dedication, young people can create opportunities for themselves and influence positive change in their communities.
