Abdul Azam, a 55-year-old determined entrepreneur from Fiji, exemplifies how a challenging upbringing can transform into a journey of success and self-empowerment. Raised amidst the rice paddies in Bua and the sugarcane fields of Seaqaqa in Macuata, Mr. Azam experienced firsthand the daily grind of survival. He firmly believes that poverty should not define one’s identity but rather serve as a catalyst for growth and ambition.
“Growing up, life was tough. It forced me to work hard and overcome my problems,” Mr. Azam reflected, emphasizing the resilience that hardship instilled in him. After leaving school in Form 4, he ventured out in search of better opportunities, eventually relocating to the Garden Island in the 1980s where he worked for a shoemaker in Somosomo. This experience became a pivotal moment in his life, equipping him with skills and knowledge that would later aid him in establishing his own business.
Following his time in Somosomo, Mr. Azam moved to Viti Levu and settled in Nasinu, where he briefly worked as a truck driver before launching Bob’s Shoe Repair in 2000. Securing a spot at the Nasinu Town Council building in Valelevu marked the realization of his dream to own a business. “Life can be unfair at times, but you must never give up,” he advises aspiring entrepreneurs, highlighting the importance of perseverance and consistency.
Today, he runs a bustling shop that specializes in repairing shoes, bags, and cooking stoves—items that many would discard without a second thought. “If you have these things at home in a state of disrepair, then I am your man,” he said with enthusiasm, encouraging people to give their belongings a second chance instead of throwing them away.
Though his income varies, Mr. Azam manages to support himself and his two daughters living with their mother, all while saving for future challenges. He takes pride in the properties he has acquired through his hard work and shows no signs of retiring soon.
Beyond financial gains, Mr. Azam finds immense joy in the connections he fosters with his customers. “I love my job because of the people I meet and the stories we share,” he expressed, underscoring the meaningful interactions that enrich his life. As an independent business owner, he relishes the freedom of making his own decisions and embracing the path he has carved out for himself.
In light of his experiences, Mr. Azam delivers a powerful message to the youth: steer clear of drugs. He warns that substance abuse can severely impact both mental and physical well-being, derailing aspirations before they can take flight. “Nurture your life just as your parents nurtured you. Make them proud and happy,” he urges young people to focus on the potential that lies ahead.
