After dedicating over three decades to the Ministry of Forestry, retired forestry expert Malakai Sevudredre is continuing his mission to promote sustainable forestry practices from his village of Lawaki in Namena, Tailevu. Transitioning into a sole trader, Sevudredre has become a key beneficiary of the Forest Subsidy Programme (FSP), which significantly increased its funding from $50,000 to $250,000 in the 2023-2024 fiscal year. This boost aims to enhance forestry-based cottage industries across Fiji.

Sevudredre, a former instructor from the Ministry’s Forestry Training Centre, is leveraging his extensive expertise to conduct workshops focused on the safe and efficient use of chainsaws and other forestry tools. His efforts have reached various companies and cooperatives throughout Viti Levu, although logistical challenges have made it difficult to expand his reach to other islands.

At 58, Sevudredre remains optimistic that improved resources, particularly reliable connectivity and transportation, will enable him to grow his business and extend sustainable forestry practices to more communities. One significant challenge he faces is the lack of connectivity, as Lawaki has been designated a “black spot” by Telecom Fiji, complicating communication and outreach efforts.

Despite these hurdles, Sevudredre’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship shines through, serving as an inspiring example of grassroots advocacy for sustainable forestry. His journey illustrates the importance of governmental support and infrastructure in empowering local communities to succeed in sustainable endeavors.

Similar initiatives, such as giving brush cutters to youth in Uluiloli Village, show the government’s commitment to bolstering entrepreneurship in rural areas. These projects reflect a broader trend of enhancing local economies and creating job opportunities, underscoring the significant role of grassroots support in driving sustainable development throughout Fiji. The engagement and empowerment of local experts like Sevudredre can lead to transformative impacts on both conservation efforts and economic growth, fostering hope and resilience in communities across the nation.
