In an inspiring story of resilience and determination, Nakasi High School’s head girl and dux recipient, Esther Lusiana Kuva, has dedicated her recent academic success to her late mother. The 18-year-old from Korovisilou Village in Serua was overwhelmed with emotion when she was announced as the school dux after an incredibly challenging year.
Esther lost her mother to bone cancer just before her Year 12 Fiji School Leaving Certificate examination, a loss that hit her and her three siblings deeply. “It was hard trying to juggle my school, my role in the school and all; at this point, I’m even shocked to be scooping all these awards,” she said, reflecting on the emotional toll of the past year.
Despite the personal struggles, Esther expressed her gratitude to everyone who stood by her throughout her journey, particularly her aunt and uncle who supported her family during their difficult times, and her grandmother, who provided unwavering support. “Although my mother isn’t here physically, I know she is here with me spiritually,” Esther shared, highlighting the strength she draws from her memories.
In addition to the dux award, Esther excelled academically, receiving several accolades including the Year 13 prize, a Leadership award, and distinction awards in multiple subjects, showcasing her hard work and dedication. Her family, especially her 71-year-old grandmother, Ana Qitialewa, beamed with pride at her achievements, noting Esther’s discipline and commitment to her education.
Esther is looking forward to her next chapter, as her family prepares to move to Koronivia after her father purchased land in the area. She has aspirations of entering the medical field, contemplating either nursing or dental care as her path forward.
In a message for her peers, Esther emphasized the importance of sacrifice and dedication. “In everything you do, put God first and He will do the rest,” she advised, showcasing her faith and optimism.
