Eswa Nadan, popularly known as “Ninja,” is a respected figure in Fijian football, having made significant contributions over the years. At 58 years old, he continues to be an integral part of the sport, recently being honored by the Fiji Football Association with an induction into the Fiji FA Legends Programme on December 1 in Nadi.
Originally from Nadi, Ninja currently resides in Sydney, Australia, where he runs a thriving air-conditioning and refrigeration business. His football journey began in primary school in 1977, a passion that has immensely shaped his life. In a recent interview, he reflected on how football has been a catalyst for personal growth and an avenue through which he has traveled and built a strong character.
Nadan first made his mark in football while playing for Nadi Sangam Primary, where he scored the winning goal in an inter-primary competition. Although his high school years were initially focused on academics, he eventually committed to the sport, helping his local club, Navo, achieve promotion through an unbeaten season before moving up to the senior division.
As he advanced in his career, he caught the eye of Nadi’s district team manager, leading to his debut match for Nadi in 1987. During his time with the club, he celebrated remarkable achievements, including a vital win against Lautoka—their 15-match unbeaten streak came to an end with his winning goal in a memorable game that coincided with the Sugar Festival.
Ninja’s impressive talents on the field led him to become a prolific striker, earning a reputation for scoring against almost every opponent he faced. After an ankle injury and other setbacks prematurely cut his playing career short in 1994, he transitioned into coaching, guiding youth teams and eventually taking charge of the Nadi district team.
After moving to Australia in 2001, Nadan established the Nadi Veterans Club, promoting continued engagement in football among expatriates.
