Joeli Varo, a respected academic and land management professional from Narayawo Village in Namosi, shares his life lessons with the younger generation, emphasizing that while a degree is significant, true education is reflected in one’s behavior. Mr. Varo’s journey from humble beginnings to his current role is both motivational and insightful.
Raised in Nakavu Village, Joeli came from a hardworking family: his mother worked as a teacher while his father served as a truck driver for the Public Works Department. This background instilled a strong work ethic in him from a young age. As the third of five siblings, he navigated the challenges and joys of being part of a large family, often engaging in farming, which sparked his interest in land management.
Mr. Varo’s academic journey began at Nakavu Village School before he moved to Vashist Muni College in Navua for his secondary education. Although he initially aspired to a future in rugby, the guidance of a supportive history teacher at Suva Grammar School redirected him toward a path in education. He pursued higher education at the University of the South Pacific, where he faced financial challenges after his parents retired, demonstrating resilience by selling cassava to cover his bus fares and commuting from Navua to Suva.
At USP, he earned a double major in land management and geography, as well as a diploma in these fields. Following graduation, he interned at the Ministry of Lands, which led to a scholarship opportunity to study in Trinidad, further expanding his expertise in land management. After returning to Fiji, he worked at the Ministry of Lands and the i-Taukei Land Trust Board, eventually pursuing a doctorate in Papua New Guinea before returning to teach at Fiji National University and then at USP.
Now as the head of the land management and development discipline at USP, Mr. Varo is dedicated to shaping the next generation of professionals in this field. He emphasizes that respect is fundamental to success, reminding younger individuals that their character and how they treat others are the keys to opening doors in life.
