Dr. Mohammed Rasheed Iqbal has achieved a significant milestone for Fiji National University (FNU) by becoming its first PhD holder from the College of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry (CAFF). His doctoral thesis, entitled “Adaptive Capacity of the Fijian Dairy Industry to Climate Change and Animal Diseases,” showcases years of dedicated research aimed at addressing challenges faced by the dairy sector in Fiji.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Iqbal described it as a transition “from the farm to PhD at FNU.” Growing up in Tailevu with a strong background in beef production, he developed an early passion for animal science, which propelled him into academia. His life story is characterized by relentless perseverance, overcoming obstacles, and a commitment to his studies, highlighting how socio-economic challenges can be surmounted through dedication and hard work.

Dr. Iqbal began his academic path at FNU in 2014, progressing from a Certificate in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to a higher education PhD. His academic qualifications include a Certificate III in Commercial Agriculture, a Trade Diploma in Animal Husbandry, a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry, a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching, a Postgraduate Diploma in Agriculture, and a Master’s by Research in Animal Science.

He expressed gratitude for the support he received from various mentors, including Associate Professor Dr. Royford Bundi Magiri, Dr. Harrison Osundwa Lutta, Professor Nii-K Plange, Professor Paul Adelji, Associate Professor Dr. Kaliova Ravuiwasa, and FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Walu Nabobo-Baba.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Iqbal has taken on roles such as a graduate teaching assistant in 2024 and part-time lecturer in 2025, where he continues to inspire the next generation of animal scientists. His success sets a powerful example, underscoring the message that with dedication and hard work, students from all backgrounds can overcome their circumstances and achieve greatness.
