Rusila Camaibure expresses deep gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices that have allowed her to pursue her academic and athletic aspirations. The 20-year-old athlete, currently playing for the Kulawai rugby league team in Melbourne, noted that the team comprises many iTaukei players participating in the Bula Cup competition.

Camaibure mentioned that while she is primarily a rugby union player, her selection for the Victorian state team has helped her appreciate and embrace rugby league as well. Originating from Delaidamanu Village in Naitasiri and with maternal ties to Visoqo, Macuata, she identifies as a versatile player capable of performing in both the wing and second row positions. She completed her primary education at Natoaika District School and pursued her secondary education from Year Nine to 13 at Muaniweni College. Currently, she is studying at Yorke Institute in Melbourne.

In an unexpected turn of events, Camaibure was initially skeptical when she received an email from the Bulikula team, fearing it might be a scam. Upon replying, she received a call from coach Joe Rabele confirming her selection.

Camaibure aims to help the team qualify for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup, expressing her nerves about representing her national team, family, and province for the first time. She acknowledged the significant differences in rules and structures between rugby union and rugby league, which she is still navigating.

Being away from her parents has proven challenging for her, as she balances her commitment to rugby with her educational pursuits in Melbourne. Despite the sacrifices she has to make, Camaibure remains grateful for her parents’ encouragement, particularly in prioritizing her Christian faith.

She aims to inspire young people, advocating that their sacrifices will ultimately bring rewards.
