From Dreams to Dedication: A Teacher’s Journey

Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a dedicated educator from the village of Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, is celebrating 15 impactful years in the teaching profession. At 38 years old, Mr. Mataitoga reflects on his journey, which has significantly influenced countless students throughout his career.

His educational journey began at Vulivuli Primary School and continued through Saqani Junior Secondary School, Labasa College, and Labasa Muslim College. Although he initially dreamed of becoming a nurse to help others, he found his true calling in teaching after enrolling at Lautoka Teachers College. After graduating, he was posted back to Ono-i-Lau, where he spent his first five years as an assistant teacher at the local primary school, reconnecting deeply with his roots.

Following his tenure in Ono-i-Lau, Mr. Mataitoga moved to Nasinu Sangam School for three years. It was during this time that he pursued and completed postgraduate studies, ultimately earning a master’s degree in education. Currently, he teaches Class 7 and 8 students at Onolevu District School, marking his third year in this role. Over his 15-year career, he dedicated the last decade as a head teacher.

Recently, Mr. Mataitoga embraced Scouts leadership training, describing it as a transformative experience that enhanced his teaching approach and connected him to community service. He encourages youth participation in Scouts, emphasizing the importance of discipline and community involvement in building essential leadership skills.

Looking to the future, Mr. Mataitoga aspires to become an education officer, aiming to make a broader impact in the educational landscape of Fiji. His journey exemplifies the belief that sometimes good things must fall apart for better opportunities to arise, showcasing his resilient spirit and positive outlook.
