Pawan Deo, formerly the accountant for the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), and his wife Subhashni Mudaliar, appeared in the Suva Magistrate’s Court today, where both pleaded not guilty to multiple fraud-related charges. The couple faces serious allegations including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining financial gain, and unlawfully securing a financial advantage.

The charges stem from accusations that while managing their business, Sports Supplies Limited (SSL), they unlawfully acquired $53,788.75 from the FRU between February 1 and July 31, 2022. Furthermore, they are alleged to have facilitated unauthorized payments, resulting in an improper gain of $7,291.83 for SSL, knowing the company was ineligible to receive such funds from February 1 to May 11, 2022.

During the court session presided over by Magistrate Krishan Prasad, prosecution lawyer Ravinesh Lal confirmed that all necessary disclosures regarding the charges were provided to the couple on November 26 of the previous year. The couple’s legal representatives announced their intention to seek a reconsideration of the charges from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Following today’s proceedings, their bail was extended, and the case was adjourned until February 28 for further hearings. This situation underlines the ongoing emphasis on financial integrity within Fiji’s sporting organizations, particularly in light of increasing scrutiny regarding governance practices.

As these legal proceedings unfold, the case represents a crucial moment for accountability in the sports sector, with potential implications for reinforcing ethical standards and fostering transparency in financial management. The outcome may serve not only to address the allegations at hand but also to promote a culture of integrity that can discourage similar misconduct in the future, ultimately benefiting the entire sporting community in Fiji.
