Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a dedicated educator from Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, is marking an impressive 15 years in the teaching profession. At 38 years old, Mr. Mataitoga reflects on his journey, which has positively impacted countless students throughout his career.

His educational journey began at Vulivuli Primary School, followed by studies at Saqani Junior Secondary School, Labasa College, and Labasa Muslim College. Originally aspiring to become a nurse to help others, he shifted gears and found his true calling in teaching after enrolling at Lautoka Teachers College. After graduating, he returned to his roots in Ono-i-Lau, where he began his teaching career as an assistant at a local primary school for five years.

Mr. Mataitoga’s journey continued as he took a position at Nasinu Sangam School for three years. During this time, he pursued further education, ultimately earning both postgraduate qualifications and a master’s degree in education. He is currently teaching Class 7 and 8 at Onolevu District School, where he has spent three years, alongside a decade of experience as a head teacher.

Recently, Mr. Mataitoga participated in Scouts leadership training, which he found to be enriching and transformative. He encourages young people to join Scouts, emphasizing the importance of discipline and community involvement in developing essential leadership skills.
