Josaia McNamara has lived a life imbued with art and culture from an early age. Born in the iTaukei community of Matuku in Lau and raised in Tamavua, the 50-year-old artist’s upbringing was characterized by a harmonious blend of cultural richness and the simplicity of rural life. Growing up in Suva with his maternal grandparents, he was deeply rooted in hard work and a profound connection to the land, with his family engaging in farming and his mother’s handicraft business.
Reflecting on his childhood, McNamara recalls assisting with farming and observing his mother carve and sell her handicrafts. He navigates his life story without a father figure, emphasizing the dedication of his mother, who raised him with great care.
