Zabeen Rukshar Khan’s choice to transition from her successful career as a café manager to becoming a goat farmer might appear unusual, but it has blossomed into her true calling. The 29-year-old decided to pivot her career after experiencing the severe impacts of the 2019 pandemic, which compelled her to leave the hospitality industry after four years.

Drawn to agriculture through her farming background and encouraged by her husband, Khan made the daring leap into goat farming, despite her initial hesitations. The transition proved challenging, but she eventually found deep satisfaction in her new path. Reflecting on her experiences, she stated, “It was a little de-motivating at first because you have this glamorous job and all of a sudden, you’re running after some wild animals.” However, she now draws parallels between caring for goats and nurturing children, finding personal fulfillment in the responsibilities that come with her work.

Alongside her farming endeavors, Khan has also embraced a new role as a wedding planner, demonstrating her diverse skill set. Recently, her hard work was recognized when she received a Women in Agriculture award, which she dedicated to her husband and her supporters.

Khan champions the empowerment of women, urging them to embrace risks and believe in their potential. “Take a shot, take a leap of faith. I think any woman can do it if they put their heart into it,” she emphasized. This sentiment resonates closely with the broader movement of women in agriculture, reflecting the courage and determination that many women like Vidya Wati and Olivia Cavuka have shown in transforming their lives through farming.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day, Khan’s journey not only highlights her personal triumph but also celebrates women’s increasing presence in traditionally male-dominated fields, inspiring others to break boundaries and pursue their passions. Her story exemplifies hope and the rewards that come from following one’s dreams, reinforcing the idea that hard work and dedication can lead to success, regardless of the obstacles faced.
