Ajay Kumar, who was charged with the murder of his partner Saleshni Devi, has been released from the High Court in Lautoka, following the State’s decision not to proceed with the case against him. The prosecution informed the court that they would not be continuing with the case, leading Justice Riyaz Hamza to declare Kumar a free man and revoke all bail conditions.

Kumar was accused of murdering Devi after a tragic incident on September 15, 2021, where her vehicle went off a cliff in Teidamu. Outside the court, Kumar expressed his desire for the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, claiming he was wrongfully charged. He reflected on the pain he experienced due to the charges, stating, “I have gone through so much pain and hurt. I lost my wife who was the victim.” He emphasized that his release would allow his children to seek justice.

Kumar’s lawyer, Jitendra Reddy, noted the lengthy ordeal Kumar faced during the four years of proceedings, which included personal losses and hardships. Reddy expressed relief that justice was ultimately served. The case of Kumar resonates in the context of other recent legal developments in Fiji, where the judicial system has demonstrated a growing capacity to reassess cases based on new evidence, as seen in other similar cases.

Kumar’s case serves as a reminder of the emotional and personal toll that prolonged legal battles can have on individuals and families while highlighting the importance of ensuring fair treatment in the judicial system. With the resolution of this case, there is a hopeful note that those affected can now begin the process of healing and moving forward.
