Mike Friday, head coach of the Mike Friday Select team, expressed his pride in his players’ strong response during Day Two of the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament. After facing disappointment at the conclusion of Day One, the team emerged victorious in their final pool match, reigniting their quarterfinal hopes.

Recognizing the intense competition this year, with the Coral Coast Sevens expanding to 24 teams, Friday noted that the stakes have risen significantly, making every match and point crucial. The team understood that they needed an exceptional performance to advance in a tournament known for punishing mistakes.

“We weren’t happy with the end of Day One, so we had to come out here and do whatever we could to give ourselves the best chance of qualifying in what is a really ruthless competition,” Friday stated. He commended his players for their improved performance, emphasizing the strategic patience required in sevens rugby.

The importance of their final pool match was underscored by the substantial points scored, which helped enhance their points difference. This proved to be critical as they awaited results from other matches. Ultimately, the Dominion Brothers delivered the necessary outcome by defeating the USA, ensuring Mike Friday Select secured a spot in the quarterfinals.

The Coral Coast 7s tournament is ongoing at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, and the matches can be followed live on FBC Sports. The resilience shown by Friday’s team serves as a testament to their dedication and determination as they navigate the challenges of this highly competitive environment.
