In a unique blend of creativity and sensory imagination, Alexander Yashin, a blind perfumer, crafts fragrances that evoke the beauty of the world around him. At 31 years old, Yashin, who can only perceive light and shadow, works diligently at Pure Sense, a Moscow-based perfumery where he is part of a team that includes other blind perfumers.

The company, founded by Ekaterina Zinchenko five years ago, aims to create an inclusive environment that celebrates the talents of all its employees. Zinchenko, who emphasized the significance of diversity in her team, stated that each perfumer brings their own character and style, contributing to a rich variety of fragrance compositions.

Yashin likens the art of perfumery to music, explaining that different scents serve as notes that can be harmonized into complex compositions. His ability to draw from heightened senses, notably his sense of smell and sound, informs his work, allowing him to create fragrances inspired by his surroundings and past experiences, including his time performing with a folk music ensemble.

As Pure Sense looks toward international expansion, the emphasis on the individual styles and unique perspectives of its perfumers remains a priority. Yashin’s journey serves as an inspiring example of how passion and creativity can thrive regardless of visual impairment, showcasing the potential of disabled individuals in the arts and entrepreneurship.

This uplifting narrative highlights the strength of an inclusive approach to business, where diverse perspectives enrich the creative output and challenge conventional notions of ability. It shows that artistry can flourish in many forms, illustrating that limitations can often lead to innovative pathways.

Yashin’s efforts not only enrich the world of fragrance but also serve as a reminder of the power of creativity and the potential for all individuals, regardless of their challenges, to contribute meaningfully to society.
