Residents of Dromuninuku, Naweni in Cakaudrove are celebrating the launch of a new clean water source designed to combat water-borne diseases within their community. The initiative, which has been four years in the making, is a result of dedicated efforts coupled with support from the Ministry of Health.
Village Headman Luke Ramasima expressed gratitude for the long-awaited project, emphasizing its significance for the local population. The $22,000 investment aims to provide safe drinking water, effectively ending years of reliance on untreated sources that posed health risks.
Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, highlighted that this project is part of a larger Water, Sanitation and Hygiene program being implemented across Vanua Levu. He pointed out that access to clean water is essential for preventing water-related diseases, especially in rural areas where resources can be scarce.
Ramasima acknowledged the importance of the new water supply, stating, “For the last four years, we have been looking for a new water supply, and we are thankful to the Ministry of Health for coming on board to help the people of Dromuninuku.”
Dr. Lalabalavu also urged community members to take ownership of the new water system to ensure its longevity and effectiveness. This initiative is set to enhance the lives of approximately 92 households and over 400 villagers, marking a significant stride towards improved health and living conditions in Dromuninuku.
The Ministry emphasized that projects like this are crucial for enhancing public health and ensuring reliable access to clean water in rural communities, setting a hopeful outlook for the future.
