The Suva Magistrates Court has handed down a 12-month non-custodial sentence to former schoolteacher Kishore Kumar for his conduct involving vulgar comments directed at Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, in a case dating back to 2022. Alongside this sentence, the court imposed a three-year suspended sentence, emphasizing that Kumar will remain out of prison unless he reoffends during this period.

During the court proceedings this morning, Kumar pleaded guilty to two counts: unauthorized access to computer systems and causing harm through electronic communications. The allegations stem from an incident on December 14, 2022, when Kumar allegedly accessed a Facebook account that did not belong to him and posted a video entitled “Power in His Voice.” This video contained derogatory remarks aimed at Singh, who was serving as the General Secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union at the time.

In a separate case, Kumar is scheduled to address charges related to Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua. He faces accusations of indecently annoying her and criminal intimidation for allegedly making inappropriate comments. His plea for these charges will be recorded tomorrow while he remains in custody.

This situation underscores the ongoing concerns regarding the misuse of social media and the importance of accountability in digital communications. As legal proceedings continue, it is crucial to foster a respectful online environment and advocate for the correct handling of digital interactions. It is hoped that these court decisions will help reinforce the significance of behavior standards in digital communications, ultimately promoting safety and respect among users.
