Former lawyer Shazran Lateef made another appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court today, continuing to face serious allegations regarding illicit drugs. This marks yet another chapter in a troubling legal history where Lateef has been entangled with multiple drug-related charges.

In a notable instance from 2019, Lateef was charged for the sixth time after authorities seized 4.6 grams of marijuana and 1.8 grams of cocaine during a drug raid on December 10. More recently, he was granted $500 bail for allegedly possessing 0.584 grams of methamphetamine discovered on December 4 of last year.

Today’s court hearing was focused on drug-related accusations that date back to August 13, 2021, when Lateef was allegedly found in possession of 1.8 grams of methamphetamine and 1.0 grams of marijuana. In a separate courtroom, he also faced additional charges for the possession of illicit drugs.

Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne has ruled that Lateef will proceed to judgment concerning one of these drug charges. Both the prosecution and Lateef have been directed to prepare their submissions ahead of the judgment, which is scheduled for delivery on the 2nd of next month. Meanwhile, Lateef’s bail has been extended, with strict deadlines imposed for the submission of necessary court documents.

As this case develops, it emphasizes the ongoing challenges surrounding drug-related offenses and the legal system’s efforts to maintain justice.
