Former Fiji football captain Maritino Nemani has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Suva Rugby Union, a significant development for the rugby community in the capital. His leadership is expected to inject new energy and vision into the organization, as he aims to fortify the Union’s foundations and build upon the legacy established by previous administrators.
Nemani, who has deep roots in rugby, expressed that both rugby and football hold a dear place in his heart, having played a pivotal role in shaping his identity. “Suva Rugby, like football, is very dear to me because it shaped what I am today. Representing my club team week in and week out is the heartbeat of our Suva Football and Rugby Union culture. My role is to continue the good work that has been done over the past decades by former executives, club representatives and our provincial teams,” he stated.
His rugby journey began at the Nabua Rugby Club, where he played from 1987 to 1993, and included a stint with Raiwaqa Rugby Club between 1995 and 1996. Beyond his playing career, he has held significant positions within the rugby community, serving as President of Nabua Rugby Club from 2005 to 2010 and as Vice President of Raiwaqa Rugby Club from 1995 to 1997.
Although renowned for his football successes—he captained Suva and led the Fiji national team during a distinguished 12-year international career—Nemani has continually remained connected to rugby in Suva. In addition to his sporting commitments, he currently works as the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, and has previously held positions, such as Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports.
In his acceptance speech, Nemani expressed gratitude towards the Suva Rugby families, affiliated clubs, and the Executive Committee for their support, showing confidence in the power of collective leadership to steer the Union toward a strong and united future. His appointment is not only a testament to his commitment to local sports but also signals a hopeful direction for the Suva Rugby Union as it seeks to enhance unity and success within its ranks.
