Julie Nakulanikoro, a 20-year-old from Komave Village in Baravi, Nadroga, is making strides in the field of animal science as a third-year student at Fiji National University’s Koronivia Campus. Recently appointed as the Nadroga/Navosa youth representative, she attended the National Youth Council (NYC) annual general meeting in Naqarawai Village, Namosi, where she highlighted issues affecting rural youth.
Nakulanikoro's journey into animal science was inspired by her upbringing in a household involved in livestock farming. Her studies have provided her with valuable insights into animal health and management, expanding her early interest into potential career paths such as veterinary medicine and livestock specialization.
Currently, she is interning with the animal health and production division in Vatuwaqa, where her responsibilities include assisting with medicinal drug management, government funding allocations, and regulatory issues. This experience has allowed her to observe that many senior roles in her field are held by women, prompting her to encourage young women to pursue careers in what are often considered male-dominated fields.
At the NYC meeting, Nakulanikoro expressed concerns about the limitations young people in rural areas face due to traditional expectations. She recognized the need for better outreach and engagement to empower youths to explore diverse opportunities beyond conventional roles. She aims to bring back insights and resources from the NYC to benefit other young individuals in Nadroga/Navosa, emphasizing the importance of thinking creatively and breaking free from traditional constraints.
