FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has expressed his admiration for the young props Tim Hyot and Atunaisa Sokobale, who made their international debuts during the team’s recent tour in Europe. Despite their lack of experience at this level, both players handled the pressure commendably, showcasing their potential for future contributions to the team.
Byrne highlighted Sokobale’s impressive performance, particularly noting his try against Spain as a defining moment that demonstrated his eagerness and determination to succeed on the international stage. “He really showed some real desire, and that’s what we’re looking for in those young guys,” Byrne commented.
Similarly, Byrne praised Hyot, who stepped up effectively in place of Eroni Mawi, emphasizing the importance of these experiences for the players’ growth. “It’s a great opportunity for them to see what it was like to be an international player,” he noted, adding that both players were not only unphased but also impressed by the pace and intensity of the game.
The tour also provided the coaching staff a chance to evaluate team depth amidst injuries, with Pita Gus Sowakula receiving an opportunity to shine. “Bringing Pita Gus in was a good chance to have a look at him as well,” Byrne stated.
Byrne outlined his expectations for the young talent, stating, “We don’t need them to be match winners or anything like that. We want them to be the best they can be for themselves.” This supportive approach aims to foster confidence and experience, setting the stage for these young athletes to take on more significant roles in the future.
As the Flying Fijians look ahead to the Nations Cup and beyond, nurturing the development of young players will be vital for the team’s success in the long run, promising a bright future for the squad.
