FIJI Water Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne expressed his admiration for the team’s performance following their 42-16 triumph over Samoa in the opening match of the 2024 Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup, which took place in Suva last Friday.
Byrne highlighted the impressive contributions of both the young players and the seasoned veterans who rose to the occasion. He stated, “They did well straight off the bat,” praising their discipline, particularly during the first half, despite having only three training sessions that week. He also noted the excellent leadership from the coaching staff.
The coach acknowledged the debutants for their remarkable performances and their ability to thrive in front of a supportive home crowd. “Deep down, you know they’re going to be nervous, and they will try and play well. I thought they did well when they got their hands on the ball,” he commented.
With the Flying Fijians now enjoying a bye week in Pool A of the Pacific Nations Cup, all eyes are on the upcoming clash between Tonga and Samoa. The team will utilize this time to prepare for their next significant challenge against Tonga.
