The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in the towns of Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki due to rising water levels in the region. These actions, as highlighted by Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations Livai Driu, are crucial for ensuring public safety and preventing damage to infrastructure while deterring criminal activities during this vulnerable time.
Currently, there are four active evacuation centers in the Western Division, which are sheltering 226 individuals. Authorities anticipate that more people may need shelter if the rainfall continues. The Ba to Rakiraki highway is currently closed, and access to Tavua Town is limited.
Local police are taking proactive measures by evacuating residents from high-risk areas and remain prepared to monitor any changing conditions as the situation develops.
This community response underscores the commitment of Fijian authorities to safeguard their residents during adverse weather conditions and emphasizes the importance of preparedness in times of natural events. As the evacuation efforts continue, it’s hopeful that the affected towns will quickly recover and restore normalcy soon, with support from both local and national resources.
