Severe weather conditions have disrupted business operations in several towns within the western division of Fiji, including Ba and Rakiraki. Rising water levels significantly impacted local shops, leading to temporary closures to ensure safety and minimize damage.

Moshin Khan, the special administrator chair of the Ba Town Council, emphasized the necessity of closing businesses during the flooding to safeguard livelihoods. He and his team have proactively collaborated with the Ba Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Fiji National Disaster Risk Management Office, local police, and the National Fire Authority to address the situation. While Ba Main Street initially remained open on Friday, it experienced closures in the afternoon as conditions worsened, with water entering the Market Arcade as early as 7 am.

In Tavua, health inspector Serevi Nabura reported a closure of the MaxVal-U supermarket due to nearby flooding from the river, although Tavua town itself remained open. Rakiraki, however, faced even more pervasive flooding, necessitating a complete shutdown as water levels surged from a nearby creek.

Conversely, Nadi and Nadroga/Navosa regions appeared to fare better amidst the weather disturbances. Muni Reddy, the chief executive officer of the Nadi Town Council, remarked that business continued as usual, with storefronts undergoing cleanup efforts rather than dealing with closures. Suresh Naidu, chairman of the Nadroga Navosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, echoed this sentiment, noting that businesses in the area resumed regular activities without significant disruption.

In summary, while several towns face challenges due to flooding, communities are coming together to navigate this adversity. The collaborative efforts among local leaders, businesses, and emergency services reflect a strong commitment to resilience and recovery in the face of natural challenges. It’s promising to see that not all areas are severely affected, which can inspire hope for those coping with the aftermath of the weather-related incidents.
