Farasiko Tubananuku, a determined 24-year-old from Navosa, showcased remarkable resilience as he navigated a flooded bridge to participate in the 14th McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s. His brave journey, captured on video, has struck a chord with many, embodying the true spirit of rugby.
Tubananuku received a last-minute notification to step in as injury cover for Fiji Airways rep Mosese Naura, despite adverse weather conditions that had inundated his village. As relentless rains persisted, he felt compelled to act swiftly. “When I got the call from Pio Tuwai, it was flooding in the village and the rain had not stopped from morning to evening,” Tubananuku recounted. The moment he answered the phone, he knew he had to seize the chance: “I said yes straight away. I thank God for protecting me and giving me this chance to play at the Coral Coast 7s, something I did not think would happen this year.”
Realizing the significance of the opportunity, he further expressed, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I was not going to let a flooded bridge stop me from being part of this tournament.” Now a part of the New Zealand Fijian Cavaliers, Tubananuku is excited to join a talented squad and eager to benefit from the experience of seasoned sevens players.
The Cavaliers are set to face Uso Tasi at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka at 12.48 PM, with fans able to catch the match live on FBC Sports. Tubananuku’s story resonates as a testament to perseverance and dedication, inspiring budding athletes everywhere to overcome obstacles on their sporting journeys.
