The inaugural OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup is set to begin this weekend in the Solomon Islands. This event holds special significance as the country has a rich tradition in men’s futsal, having won the OFC Futsal Men’s Nations Cup six times and participated in four FIFA Futsal World Cups.
Fiji’s women’s team, under the guidance of former Solomon Islands futsal international Jerry Sam, will kick off the tournament against Tahiti in the opening match on Saturday evening. Sam, who currently oversees Fiji’s Futsal and beach soccer initiatives, highlighted the importance of this tournament for advancing women’s futsal in the region.
“It’s crucial that OFC has created this opportunity for women’s futsal. The first-ever Futsal Women’s Nations Cup marks a significant advancement and should motivate more women to engage with the futsal community,” he stated.
The match between Fiji and Tahiti is scheduled for tomorrow at 6 pm.
