Women’s Minister Sashi Kiran has called for a transformative approach among Fiji’s youth, emphasizing the significance of instilling responsibility as a cornerstone of their development. Addressing the Naitasiri Tertiary Students Association in Nadi, Kiran highlighted the responsibilities of caring for family, children, communities, and their vanua, or homeland. Her remarks underscore the need to prioritize sustaining familial and cultural values amidst growing societal challenges.

Kiran criticized the trend of neglecting children’s needs over spending on social events. She expressed concerns about children going hungry or being left in unsupportive environments, where they may face abuse. The minister emphasized the importance of emerging as conscientious individuals contributing positively at work, home, and within society.

Acknowledging the role of students as future leaders, Kiran encouraged volunteerism as a pathway to acquiring essential life skills, often overlooked in formal education. She emphasized that government-funded scholarships are not mere financial aids but are investments made by the government, families, and communities. These contributions highlight the expectations placed on students to return and lead their communities.

The minister also addressed the erosion of family values amidst the pursuit of success, calling attention to the increasing trend of child neglect. She stressed the importance of parents taking full responsibility for their children, asserting that the legacy of values imparted to a child is far more enduring than material achievements.

This focus on responsibility and community involvement resonates with ongoing conversations led by Social Protection Minister Lynda Tabuya, who has similarly raised alarms about child neglect in Fiji. She calls for heightened parental accountability alongside government and community support, advocating for mandatory education to combat educational dropout rates.

Kiran’s message evokes a collective responsibility, urging both individuals and communities to prioritize the well-being and development of the younger generation. By fostering environments rich in values and responsibility, there’s potential for significant social improvement, ensuring a robust future for Fiji’s children.
