For many families in Fiji, acquiring a skill can open doors to stable employment, personal independence, and a more hopeful future. This sentiment resonates deeply with Epineri Rawalai, who reflects on the importance of enhancing skills training for the nation’s youth through his work at the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF). Rawalai witnesses firsthand how Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) equips young individuals with the necessary tools for securing meaningful work opportunities.
In October 2025, Epineri participated in the Vanuatu National Skills Competition, an event supported by Australia through the Pacific Australia Skills initiative. His involvement was part of the Fiji–Australia Vuvale partnership, which facilitates mutual learning and idea-sharing aimed at strengthening skills training across the Pacific region. Observing the competition confirmed for him the vital role that practical, hands-on learning plays in empowering the youth of Fiji.
“The competition allowed young people from across Vanuatu to showcase their technical abilities, creativity, and innovative spirit,” Epineri noted. “Their teamwork, energy, and confidence illustrated the significant role that young people play in creating a more sustainable and thriving future.”
The experience solidified Epineri’s belief that TVET should be regarded not as a secondary option, but as a valuable and respected pathway deserving of promotion in Fiji. He was particularly moved by the integration of local cultural practices—such as weaving, carving, and traditional construction techniques—into skills training. This approach underscored the value of education that honors local traditions, which is essential in a country where culture and community are pivotal.
For numerous young Fijians, skills training provides a pragmatic route to self-discovery and preparation for in-demand jobs. Since returning from Vanuatu, Epineri has reinforced HECF’s commitment to supporting culturally relevant, youth-centered TVET programs aligned with national goals. This commitment emphasizes collaboration with training providers, industries, and other partners to ensure that young people acquire skills that foster both personal development and national progress.
Epineri’s experiences echo the broader objectives of the Pacific Australia Skills initiative and exemplify the strength of the Fiji–Australia Vuvale partnership. Through shared learning and cooperative efforts, this partnership aims to cultivate a skilled, confident, and resilient workforce for Fiji’s future.
At its core, the message is clear: when the youth of Fiji are empowered to learn and develop skills, they are taking significant steps towards building a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their country. This understanding presents hope for a sustainable and prosperous path forward, where every young person can contribute to their community and nation through their newfound capabilities.
