Digital literacy is increasingly recognized as a critical skill as Fiji progresses towards a technology-driven society. This sentiment was strongly articulated by Uwate Biutanaseva, Manager of Investigation North at the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), during the conclusion of a recent Young Leaders Seminar in Labasa. He emphasized that digital literacy is no longer a choice but a necessity, enabling individuals to effectively combat misinformation and promote accountability.
Biutanaseva’s remarks highlighted the integral role that ethics play in everyday life, urging the youth to internalize ethical principles rather than view them as mere subjects to study. The seminar aimed to equip participants with the tools to become ambassadors of integrity, committed to fostering transparency and ethical values within their communities. He noted, “Misuse of information, spreading of falsehoods, or engaging in dishonest practices online contribute to a culture of corruption.”
Emoni Tuvui, a school principal from Dreketi Central College, endorsed the seminar’s objectives, highlighting the need for such training to permeate communities. Tuvui pointed out the important role digital platforms can play when used responsibly—offering competitive advantages for students in both their studies and future careers.
The training program attracted over 46 students from various schools across Fiji’s Northern Division, emphasizing FICAC’s ongoing commitment to nurturing ethical leadership among the youth. This endeavor aligns with broader initiatives highlighted in previous seminars, wherein FICAC officials have consistently encouraged digital responsibility and ethical engagement in the digital realm.
The emphasis on digital literacy mirrors earlier discussions within Fiji’s education sector, where there is a shared commitment to preparing students for the digital economy by equipping them with essential ICT skills. Reports indicate that a significant majority of students recognize the importance of these skills, an encouraging sign of readiness to embrace technology.
